THE BACKGROUND

How is it that the people we saw in the café or the pub last night are now racing to go out and face the worst the sea can offer? How is it that this extraordinary commitment is passed down from one generation to the next?

And living in a coastal town is just different. In creating the script dozens of people along the coast contributed their stories, their hopes and aspirations. The sea is the presence that never goes away. It provides a living upon its waves for fishermen and sailors, and at its edge for those serving the needs of tourists. But it is an uncertain friend, its dangers perhaps now changing.

When the visitors have gone away many of those same towns face a lack of housing, limited employment and a greater risk of health issues.

The musical that brings together an iconic Victorian hero and a young mum from the present day. Henry Freeman miraculously survived the Whitby lifeboat disaster when all twelve other crew members perished, before leading some of the most extraordinary rescue attempts of the century. Faith is his counterpart, from a family steeped in the same tradition, juggling family, career and crewing the lifeboat.

Freeman’s exploits were set against a backdrop of success and failure. Faith is one of the new heroes, real people, facing real challenges, not just at sea.
