Creative Creatures!

Join us for two days of storytelling and puppet making and help build Whitby's giant crab!

Dogwood is partnering with four other creative organisations on an exciting project, culminating in a giant crab and other creatures  being brought to life as part of the 2026 Festival.

Using the theme of the work of iconic naturalist, Sir Joseph Banks, who travelled to the southern oceans on Captain Cook’s first voyage, local schoolchildren will also be making their own puppets for display at the event. Banks brought back no less than 30,000 samples of the different plants and animals he encountered, so there will be plenty to choose from!

There will be workshops in four schools before the weekend, as they create the puppets to be displayed. They’ll also be working on the crab, each school contributing two legs for the giant crustacean.

The weekend will also include storytelling with the support of Whitby Library and the National Literacy Trust, as well as much more creature creativity.

Also taking part areWhitby Museum and the Pannett Gallery, and will have displays over the festival weekend and look forward to meeting local families as well as visitors. Admission to the making sessions is free and all the instructions and materials for the festival puppet making are provided.

Parents are asked to accompany their children as they get to work on their creations.

And see the giant crab walk around the quayside, Sunday at 1.30pm
